A couple came to the unit with their little boy and teenage niece. The young patient, Debbie* was certain she was pregnant, but had not sought medical care. As she filled out her intake forms and completed a pregnancy test, it became clear she was quite far along in her pregnancy. We were concerned that she had not prioritized prenatal care with a physician.
It was important for us to take time alone with Debbie to minister to her and provide the medical awareness and education she needed. Debbie explained that the past two years have been difficult. Her boyfriend and father of the baby, Miguel* was in prison while she was pregnant with her first child and she was all alone. A year ago they all relocated from the Los Angeles area to the Inland Empire. Debbie said she felt alone, was having a hard time, missed her family and could not seem to adjust to the area. However, Debbie was excited to have her niece visiting on spring break. For the first time, Debbie felt the comfort of her family that she was missing so much.
When we asked Debbie about any spiritual beliefs, she said she and Miguel had talked about God recently and had tried a local church. They felt uncomfortable and ended up leaving right away because the focus was on giving money. When we asked Debbie if she had ever heard the gospel of Jesus Christ, she said no. We were so excited to know she had been seeking God and now He had brought her to Go Mobile for Life to give us the opportunity to share Him! Debbie listened. When we offered an invitation to receive Jesus, she said YES to salvation and forgiveness of her sins! We prayed together immediately.
When we asked if we could share our conversation with Miguel, she was excited and said, “Yes, he will want to hear what you told me.” We took the opportunity to share the gospel with Miguel as well. He said YES to the Lord too! As we prayed, we could not have been more excited about what God was doing in their hearts.
Debbie’s niece was not engaged through the spiritual discussion as she played with her little cousin. However, she was very interested as we discussed healthy sexuality, STIs and making responsible choices.
Although Debbie was outside our parameters for an ultrasound, we had vital resources and community referrals to give them. Of course, the most important referral was our Lord!
As we pray each day for the patients God sends, we ask the Lord to cultivate the soil of their hearts so they may receive His word. Thank you for all the prayers you pray right alongside us! He is faithful!
